J Vineyards & Winery Announces Acquisitions

The wine producer announced the acquisition of vineyards in Annapolis, CA. Both are within the Sonoma coast AVA and bring the total number of estates owned by the company to ten. From the press release:


Healdsburg, CA, September 2, 2014 – J Vineyards & Winery, a producer of varietal and sparkling wines in California’s Russian RiverValley, announces the acquisition of two vineyards in Annapolis, California. Both hillside vineyards are part of the Sonoma Coast AVA and expand the winery’s estate vineyard footprint, bringing the total number of J owned estate vineyards to ten.

Recognizing the quality and excellence of Sonoma Coast grapes, the purchase is designed to further enhance the J estate Pinot Noir program. The new vineyards, the first J estate vineyards outside of the Russian RiverValley, encompass 44 planted vineyard acres of primarily Dijon clone Pinot Noir. Grapes from these vineyards are proven in quality, having been used in well-known Pinot Noirs over the last several years. The new vineyards are expected to be harvested in mid- to late-October, allowing J to enjoy fruit from the 2014 vintage.

“Terroir is what makes J Pinot Noir special and we continue our quest to improve our vineyard portfolio,” said J Founder and President, Judy Jordan. Calling upon her geology background, Jordan explains, “I seek sites that offer great soils with a sense of place and feel blessed that we were able to acquire these exceptional vineyards on the true Sonoma Coast. I look forward to the distinctive Pinot Noirs produced from this stunning property.”

The vineyards are greatly influenced by their location on the Sonoma Coast. Cool nights permit the grapes to retain their acids and cool, sunny days allow the fruit to ripen slowly, intensifying its flavors and potential ageability. The terroir, most notably the Goldridge soils, provides balanced mineral ratios, and offer permeability and porosity that support good drainage for the vines. Proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the slope and aspect, variations in soil, and a well-thought-out vineyard layout will all contribute to the dynamic wines made from these sites.

Having worked with Annapolis vineyards in the past, I have always been intrigued by the mix of coastal influence and California sunshine on the fruit.” said Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse. “We look forward to teasing apart areas that are exceptionally noteworthy and can stand on their own as block designates. Since Pinot Noir is a variety that is extremely sensitive to the region in which it grows, our Annapolis vineyards will definitely stand apart from the Pinot Noirs we produce from the Russian River Valley.”
