Happy Repeal Day!

The 21st Amendment, effectively ending Prohibition, was passed 79 years ago today. The 14 years when it was illegal to sell, manufacture, and transport alcohol were dark days for the drinks business. But the period transformed American drinking habits, and many of Prohibition’s manifestations live on.


How so? Some of Prohibition’s gifts to American popular culture include mixed-gender drinking, as men and women began drinking together in speakeasies, at dinner parties, in hotel rooms, and so on, which gave rise to the invention of “dating.” Prohibition also gave us mixed drinks and even NASCAR.


Here are five reasons to give thanks for Prohibition on Repeal Day.
